Green pool: why it happens and how to recover it

What turns the water green, what to do first, and when it is worth calling for help.

A pool turns green when algae develop — usually from low disinfection, poor filtration or water left still for a while. It can almost always be recovered.

Why the water turns green

Algae take advantage of three conditions: low disinfectant, poor circulation and heat. After a few neglected days, they multiply quickly.

The longer it goes on, the harder and more expensive recovery becomes — so it pays to act early.

First steps

Start by removing leaves and debris and brushing the walls and floor well. Check and correct the pH before treating.

Do a shock treatment and keep the filtration running continuously over the following hours, cleaning the filter as it traps dirt.

When to call for help

If the water is very cloudy, has a strong smell, or does not clear after treatment, there may be an equipment or balance issue best assessed by a technician.

Green pool recovery is one of our services — we leave the water ready to use and with a plan to keep it from happening again.
